Plant a tree
We all know by now why it’s a good idea to plant trees. That’s right, they help absorb carbon dioxide in the air and provide us with the oxygen we need to breathe. Planting a tree can help offset all the carbon emissions which pour out of your home.
Trees also add beauty to our world and provide homes and food for birds and animals. Why not try planting a fruit tree, these will supply you with tasty goodness for years to come!

Make a compost heap
Compost heaps are a great way of reducing your household waste and it’s also very good for your garden. There are all sorts of things you can chuck on it, fruit and vegetable peelings, tea bags, grass cuttings and even biodegradable packaging.
Keep churning it up and it provides a great fertiliser for your plants, the natural way. Every little bit you feed to your compost heap gets put to good use and is not then transported off to landfill sites.

Grow vegetables and herbs
Home grown veggies and herbs are by far the best! Why not start with just a small patch in the corner of the garden and experiment with your favourite veggies.
It’s much better to have home grown food instead of food which has had to be transported to your local supermarket. Or maybe try a strawberry patch? These are a real treat in the summer!

Use a water barrel
Here’s a great way to cut down on the amount of water you use, especially in the summer when mum and dad are using the hose to water the garden.
Make or buy a water barrel and stick it in the garden or if possible near a drainpipe by the house and watch it collect the rainfall. It will soon fill up (especially if you live in rainy Manchester!) and this can then be put to good use around the garden.

Play outside more!
Try and play out in the garden as much as you can. It’s far more interesting than being stuck in front of the telly all the time.
Not only will you be saving energy by switching off those applicances, it’s also much healthier than being sat on your bum all day! Remember your garden is like a miniature jungle waiting to be explored!
